Wikipedia defines the EnMS (ISO 50001) standard as the "requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system, whose purpose is to enable an organization to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy security, energy use and consumption. The standard aims to help organizations continually reduce their energy use, and therefore their energy costs and their greenhouse gas emissions."

Business needs to constantly track their energy consumption, benchmark it and manage it in order to prevent runaway input costs and become more efficient in

producing a product or service. This is also directly linked to the organizations carbon footprint. An Energy Management system is a constant process of tracking energy consumption and identifying ways and means of reducing it.
